This week CMS released 2 transmittals implementing the Annual Wellness Visit (AWV), including personalized prevention plan services (PPPS), which was a part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA, also referred to by CMS as ACA). The new benefit entitles the beneficiary to an AWV after the first 12 months of their eligibility/coverage, provided they have not had an AWV or an Initial Preventative Physical Exam (IPPE), also known as the Welcome to Medicare Visit, within the prior 12 months. This indicates that the IPPE is the only covered physical exam benefit in the first 12 months of enrollment and then the AWV will be covered every 12 months thereafter.
