A federal grand jury indicted a Florida oncologist on January 29 for allegedly diluting the cancer drug Lupron, and reselling it on the wholesale market illegally, according to Marcos Jimenez, U.S. attorney for Florida's southern district.
Victor Souaid faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted. Federal prosecutors accused him of tampering with the pre-filled Lupron syringes and diluting the drug so a single dose could be re-used on more than one patient. He allegedly billed his patients' health insurance carriers for the full dose, according to Jimenez.
Souaid is also accused of illegally selling Lupron on the wholesale market when he didn't have a license to do so. Jimenez estimates that Souaid made more than $1.5 million in illegally sold Lupron.
