A South Florida clinic owner, physician, and four nurses pleaded guilty in a Miami U.S. District Court for their roles in a fraudulent Medicare home healthcare scheme, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.
Yudel Cayro, owner and operator of Courtesy Medical Group, Inc., employed Fred Dweck, MD, to administer prescriptions, plans of care, and medical certifications for unnecessary home health and therapy services. Cayro received kickbacks and bribes from patient recruiters and other Miami-area home health agencies for having Dweck write fraudulent prescriptions, according to the DOJ.
Nurses Teresita Leal, Armando Sanchez, Lissbet Diaz, Marlenys Fernandez, and Silvio Ruiz pleaded guilty to making false statements in patients’ files while working for ABC Home Health Care Inc. and Florida Home Health Care Providers Inc. The nurses admitted to falsifying patient files for Medicare beneficiaries to make it appear the beneficiaries qualified for home healthcare services.
