CMS instructs on discarded drugs and biologicals
On August 20, CMS issued a transmittal instructing contractors to provide local guidance on the billing of discarded drugs and biologicals and use of the related JW modifier. CMS has received many inquiries in response to its previous transmittal, R1962CP.
Effective date: July 30, 2010
Implementation date: September 21, 2010

CMS implements ESRD PPS
On August 20, CMS issued a transmittal to implement the new end-stage renal disease prospective payment system (ESRD PPS), effective January 1, 2011. The changes include provisions that affect payment for lab services that will be subject to consolidated billing under the ESRD PPS (for more information, see the business requirements applicable to carriers/MACs for lab processing).
Effective date: January 1, 2011
Implementation date: January 3, 2011
