Note: New Timely Filing Rules Significantly Shorten Time to File Medicare Claims

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act included a provision that limited timely filing of claims to one year from the date of services.  This significantly shortens the time for providers to file claims.

Under the prior rules, providers had until December 31st of the following year if the service was delivered January through September;if the service was delivered October through December, they had until December 31st of the second following year.  This meant that, at a minimum, the provider had 1 year and 3 months (for a service delivered September 30) and as long as 2 years and 3 months (for a service delivered October 1st) to submit a timely claim.
