OIG posts CERT analysis

On July 14, the OIG issued an analysis of errors identified in the fiscal year 2009 comprehensive error rate testing (CERT) program. The OIG determined that six types of healthcare providers—inpatient hospitals, durable medical equipment suppliers, hospital outpatient departments, physicians, skilled nursing facilities, and home health agencies—accounted for $4.4 million, or 94%, of the $4.7 million in improper payments identified by CERT. The following three types of errors accounted for many of these improper payments:

  • Insufficient documentation
  • Miscoded claims
  • Medically unnecessary services
