CMS issues pulmonary rehab transmittals
On May 7, CMS issued transmittals to the Claims Processing Manual and Benefit Policy Manual to implement coverage for pulmonary rehabilitation services, as specified under the Medicare Improvements for Providers and Patients Act of 2008. CMS instructs contractors to accept revenue code revenue code 0948 on the 13X and 85X TOBs.

CMS implements new timely filing requirements under PPACA
On May 7, CMS issued a transmittal to make the necessary systems changes for new timely filing requirements. Section 6404 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) amended the timely filing requirements to reduce the maximum time period for submission of all Medicare fee-for-service claims to one calendar year after the date of service.

CMS updates appeals procedures
On May 7, CMS issued a transmittal to implement several changes to appeals procedures, as specified in recent rulemaking.

CMS implements increased multiple procedure payment reduction
On May 7, CMS issued a transmittal to increase the multiple procedure payment reduction for the technical component of certain diagnostic imaging procedures from 25% to 50%.

CMS requiring submission of Medicare Advantage informational claims
On May 5, CMS issued a transmittal requiring non-teaching hospitals to submit informational-only bills for the Medicare Advantage beneficiaries they treated in FY 2007 and FY 2008 on or before August 31, 2010. In addition, hospitals will be required to submit an attestation to their contractor on or before September 15, 2010.
