Los Angeles DME owner pleads guilty to Medicare fraud scheme

A Los Angeles durable medical equipment (DME) owner and operator pleaded guilty to submitting approximately $500,000 in false claims to Medicare, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.

Sylvester Ijewere, 49, admitted to working with patient recruiters to purchase fraudulent prescriptions and medical documents. He then used the documents to submit false claims to Medicare for power wheelchairs and other DME. According to the DOJ, Ijewere knowingly supplied wheelchairs to beneficiaries who did not need them.

Ijewere faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
