CMS implements extension of moratorium allowing independent labs to bill technical component of pathology services furnished to hospital patients
On April 9th, CMS issued a transmittal notifying A/B MAC/carriers to continue to pay the technical component of pathology tests for hospital inpatients and outpatients to certain independent laboratories that furnish such services until December 31, 2010 under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The manual revisions further specify that only hospitals can bill the technical component of inpatient and outpatient pathology services beginning January 1, 2011.
Effective date: January 1, 2010
Implementation date: July 9, 2010
CMS instructs on services furnished to patients in custody
On April 9, CMS issued two transmittals defining “custody” and instructing Medicare contractors not to make payment for individuals who are in “custody” under a penal statute or rule unless certain exceptions are met.
