A licensed North Carolina doctor pleaded guilty to charges of defrauding Medicare and Medicaid of over $400,000, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.

Jane Johnson-Hunter, 50, owned and operated a private ambulance transportation company where she instructed employees to re-write medical records indicating whether a patient could sit upright, stand, walk, or ride in a wheelchair. Medicare and Medicaid do not pay for transportation via ambulance if a beneficiary is able to walk or ride in a wheelchair.

Johnson-Hunter faces up to five years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.
