Modifier -59: Reduce risk, receive correct reimbursement

Correctly reporting modifier -59 can be a challenge even for the experienced coder, but doing so inappropriately puts your facility in danger. If you report the modifier when you shouldn’t, you have essentially over-coded it, and that’s a compliance problem. But if you neglect to report the modifier when you have the cause and documentation to do so, you potentially lose revenue.
