Fred S. Vernacchia, MD, medical director at San Luis Diagnostic Center in San Luis Obispo, CA, says he got a big surprise when performing his annual audit the year his facility converted to digital mammography. The cancer detection rate doubled, from 4 to 4.5 per 1,000 women to 7.9 per 1,000 women.
