Short-staffed? Tips to keep lab quality from deteriorating

The reason for staff member shortages in the lab is simple math. Laboratories need 5,000 new lab technologists every year to maintain optimal staffing levels, but schools are churning out only 1,500 new lab techs each year, says Irina Lutinger, MPH, FACHE, MASCP, MT(ASCP)DLM, senior administrative director of clinical labs at New York (NY) University Langone Medical Center and a regular spokesperson for the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
And laboratories feel the pinch.
