Shortages loom in breast imaging personnel

The study, Workforce Shortages in Breast Imaging: Impact on Mammography Utilization, predicts dramatic reductions in the number of RTs and interpreting physicians for mammography when compared to the number of women older than 40 who will need mammograms. Each year, about 1.2 million women reach the age when screenings should begin.
“Unless the number of new mammography professionals entering practice every year increases beyond the current levels, there will be a growing gap between the supply of and demand for mammography professionals over the next two decades,” the study states.
The study cites the need for interventions, such as potentially increasing reimbursement for mammography and encouraging more radiology residents to go into breast imaging.
