OIG issues review of hospital compliance with the post-acute care transfer policy during fiscal years (FY) 2003–2005
On March 11, the OIG issued a report in which it determined that hospitals improperly coded 15,051 claims subject to the post-acute care transfer policy and that, as a result, Medicare overpaid $24.8 million to these hospitals for the 3-year period that ended September 30, 2005. On January 1, 2004, CMS implemented a system edit to detect transfers improperly coded as discharges to home.
CMS issues memo on EMTALA revisions in the 2009 IPPS final rule
On March 6, CMS issued a memo in which it discussed the revisions to EMTALA that appeared in the 2009 IPPS final rule.
