Don't forget about Medicaid: 2009 OIG Work Plan highlights compliance concerns

The OIG characteristically included many Medicare reviews, audits, and investigations in its 2009 Work Plan. However, its list of Medicaid items is larger than it has been in the past, which means providers need to be just as conscientious about their Medicaid compliance as they are about Medicare. ?Providers really need to start looking ahead to protect themselves against the kind of [Medicaid] abuses the OIG is looking for,? says Michael Mangano, senior vice president of strategic management systems in Alexandria, VA. ?It?s no longer just the state looking at Medicaid providers. I think the message here is the [federal] government is paying a lot more attention to [Medicaid] fraud, waste, and abuse.?
