Walter Sanders, owner of Waltco Medical Equipment and Supplies, will serve 60 months in prison and repay approximately $800,000 to the Medicare program for paying illegal kickbacks, according to a Department of Justice press release.
Sanders illegally obtained patient information from his wife, a former secretary in the emergency department of Memphis hospital, according to the DOJ. Sanders then allegedly sold the information to other medical equipment suppliers in order for them to submit false claims for reimbursement.
Investigators traced more than 200 fraudulent claims back to Sanders’ scheme resulting in more than $800,000 in improper payments, according to the press release.
