Couple charged as fugitives in Medicare fraud scheme

Police arrested Sanjay Patel and his wife, Leena Bharat Kumar Patel, in Connecticut on Feburary 13 and charged the couple as fugitives in an alleged $1.3 million healthcare fraud scheme in California, according to a Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice press release.
According to the press release, while living in California in 2005 and 2006 the Patel’s allegedly billed Medicare and Medicaid for services they never provided. The Patel’s moved to Groton, CT in 2008.
According to the press release, police issued warrants in San Diego County, CA charging the Patels with multiple counts of various felonies, including health benefits fraud, grand theft, receiving stolen property, identity theft and money laundering.
