A shortage of on-call physicians makes it more important than ever to find an on-call payment model that works for your facility and complies with the OIG’s fair market value (FMV) guidelines.
According to Sullivan Cotter’s 2008 Physician On-Call Pay Survey Report, 85% of survey respondents have experienced difficulty finding physicians to provide on-call coverage.
Eighty-six percent of survey respondents reported that they currently provide compensation to nonemployed physicians for on-call coverage.
If your facility has not determined an on-call payment method, it will likely do so in the near future, considering the above statistics. Thus, it’s important to ensure compliance in determining FMV compensation, as advised by the OIG.
