Walgreen's pharm techs charged with Medicaid fraud
Healthcare Auditing Weekly, December 30, 2008
Two pharmacy technicians in South Florida were accused of defrauding the Medicaid program out of thousands of dollars.
According to investigators from the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU), Walgreen’s employees Ariel Sanchez and Pablo Mercade fraudulently billed Florida’s Medicaid program nearly $3000 worth of prescription medications that were unnecessary for patients, nor provided to patients.
Investigators say Sanchez and Mercade created phony refills for drugs like Zanax, Vicodin, and testosterone injections. They then sold the medications on the black market while billing Medicaid for reimbursement.
Sanchez and Mercade both face charges of third-degree organized fraud and third-degree grand theft. If convicted, they may receive up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
