With the government stepping up its efforts to combat Medicare and Medicaid fraud and abuse, compliance officers and auditors have more to think about than ever.
The DOJ reported that the government won or negotiated about $1.8 billion in judgments and settlements in fiscal year 2007, returning $797 million to the Medicare Trust Fund. It also conducted 776 new civil healthcare fraud investigations and had 743 civil investigations pending.
These big numbers might be a bit intimidating. But there’s no need to stress. Educating yourself and ensuring that you have a solid compliance program will ease your worries and make your job a lot simpler. Easier said than done, right?
