CMS talks quality in listening session
Healthcare Auditing Weekly, December 23, 2008
CMS held a listening session December 18 regarding hospital-acquired conditions (HACs), never events, and present on admission (POA) reporting. The listening session included separate inpatient and outpatient portions.
CMS addressed the problem of HACs, pointing out that a 2007 study found that, in 2002, 1.7 million hospital-acquired infections were associated with 99,000 deaths. The presentation also mentioned a Leapfrog Group survey, which found that 87% of the 1,256 hospitals surveyed did not consistently follow recommendations to prevent the most common hospital-acquired infections.
CMS then covered the regulations in the IPPS and OPPS they have put in place to address this problem. The agency also discussed guidelines for preventing infection, as well as how these guidelines were established.
