Despite the controversy regarding the implementation timetable and costs, ICD-10 means tremendous changes for healthcare organizations, including laboratories.
It’s not just about coding and coders, says Shannon E. McCall, RHIA, CCS, CPC, director of coding and health information management at HCPro, Inc., in Marblehead, MA. “Organizations not only have to prepare for operational incorporation, but also [information technology] preparedness,” says McCall.
A big hurdle is that there will be no phased implementation for ICD-10. Organizations will have to prepare for full implementation by the effective date.
