Work Plan focuses on quality

The nine new audits for hospitals in the OIG’s 2009 Work Plan shows that the quality of care is a top priority for the inspector general.
Primary concerns in the work plan include the OIG’s interest in oversight of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act of 1986 (EMTALA), never events, and hospital ownership of physician practices, says James A. Kopf, former director of program investigation at the OIG and president of Healthcare Oversight in New Canaan, CT. Also of significance is the OIG’s plan to review the Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) program, Kopf says.
