In the early 1990s, the quality of a woman’s mammogram varied greatly depending on the facility that performed the exam. To reduce those variations, the government developed and began enforcing MQSA. Today, experts note similar variations in the quality of stereotactic breast biopsy, says Dan Oakey, the mammography coordinator for the state of Florida and a certified MQSA inspector. So the FDA is poised to act again at the behest of the National Mammography Quality Assurance Advisory Committee (NMQAAC).
