Miami docs plead guilty for fraud at HIV infusion clinic
Healthcare Auditing Weekly, September 16, 2008
On September 11, two Miami physicians pleaded guilty to charges of defrauding the Medicare program in a $6.8 million HIV infusion fraud scheme, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice.
Carlos Contreras, M.D admitted that he signed documents containing false information about treatments allegedly given to HIV positive patients and that he approved medically unnecessary treatments at his clinic in Miami, CNC Medical Inc.
Ramon Pichardo, M.D. admitted that while working as a physician at CNC he conspired with Contreras and others to operate CNC as a fraudulent HIV infusion clinic. Both doctors were aware that patients referred to CNC were paid cash kickbacks in exchange for visiting the clinic and allowing their names to be used to bill Medicare.
