Mammography pain reduction available in over-the-counter gel

Getting a mammogram can be uncomfortable, even painful, for many women. Fear of this pain makes some women delay their annual exam or skip it altogether.

But a new study shows that an easy-to-use lidocaine gel helps reduce pain for certain women and could possibly help increase screening compliance, says study author Colleen Lambertz, FNP, a nurse practitioner at St. Luke’s Mountain States Tumor Institute in Boise, ID.
