Maine Medicaid pays $600,000 in overpayments due to computer error
Healthcare Auditing Weekly, August 26, 2008
The Maine Medicaid program’s malfunctioning computer system caused the program to make over $600,000 worth of overpayments to North Country Associates, Inc., a Maine healthcare provider, according to an OIG report.
The computer program, which was implemented in 2005, was designed to process reimbursement claims submitted by healthcare providers, but the program did not appropriately reduce payments to nursing homes by beneficiaries’ cost-of-care contributions and did not refund any collected overpayments to the federal government.
The OIG instructed the Maine Medicaid program to collect the overpayments totaling $618,355 from North Country and refund the $399,764 federal share of these collected overpayments to CMS.
