Providence Health and Services, a Seattle-based health system, will pay $100,000 and implement a corrective action plan after violating the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rule, according to a release from the Department of Health and Human Services.
HHS said, in the release, this is the first time it has entered into a resolution agreement with a covered entity for a HIPAA violation.
The protected health information of more than 386,000 patients was lost or stolen from Providence multiple times between September 2005 and March 2006. The information was stored on unprotected backup tapes, optical disks, and laptops, a violation of HIPAA.
