DOJ reports on efforts to combat fraud

During fiscal year 2007, the Department of Justice (DOJ) won or negotiated approximately $1.8 billion in civil judgments and settlements against healthcare providers, according to a release from the DOJ.
The DOJ opened 776 civil healthcare fraud investigations in fiscal year 2007 under the False Claims Act.
In addition, U.S. Attorney’s Offices opened 878 new criminal healthcare fraud investigations and of those, 560 defendants were convicted for healthcare fraud-related crimes during the year.
