Tip: Handling noncompliance concerns

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, June 3, 2008

Whether a noncompliance problem is based on cost reporting, claims filing, documentation, licensure, or certification, each situation requires further analysis.

If the problem is small and isolated, you may just report it to the fiscal intermediary. If it is potentially a larger problem, you might go to the OIG, but no without full understanding of the problem and careful consideration of the consequences.

The following are suggestions for handling noncompliance concerns:
  1. Report problems to the appropriate place
  2. Know and follow your organization’s protocol
  3. Advocate for your position
  4. Get professional assistance
  5. Ensure your employees know how to report problems
    1. Make certain they receive a follow-up
    2. Ensure the hotline is being used effectively
    3. Publicize the importance of compliance
This tip is adapted from the Healthcare Auditor's Handbook. For more information about the book or to order your copy, visit HCMarketplace.
