OIG estimates Medicaid payments made by Maryland for D.C. residents

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, May 20, 2008

The OIG estimated that Maryland paid $2 million for Medicaid services provided to beneficiaries from July 1, 2005, through June 30, 2006, according to an OIG report. The beneficiaries, who were residents of D.C., should not have been eligible. Maryland also paid $347,000 for Medicaid services to beneficiaries whose residence could not be established.

The OIG recommended that:

  • Maryland and D.C. work together and share information for use in determining eligibility status and decreasing the amount of payments made on behalf of D.C.-based Medicare beneficiaries
  • the state determine and verify the addresses of beneficiaries whose residency was unconfirmed

The state agreed with the recommendations except for determining the addresses of beneficiaries on Supplemental Security Income or the amount of estimated savings, and cited Federal regulations that required payment for some non-resident beneficiaries.
