Nine additional conditions proposed for list of never events
Healthcare Auditing Weekly, Houston Chronicle, April 22, 2008
Federal health officials last week proposed adding nine conditions, including dangerous blood clots in the leg, to Medicare’s list of never events—conditions Medicare won't cover if the conditions were acquired at the hospital, the Houston Chronicle reports.
The rule would apply to more than 3,500 acute care hospitals. Hospitals receive a single payment from Medicare based on the average cost of treating a certain diagnosis. Officials said hospitals cannot attempt to charge the patient for the never event-related costs.
