Ensuring that employees wear their protective equipment represents one of the most pressing problems in labs today, says Terry Jo Gile, MT(ASCP), MA, Ed, Safety Lady®, laboratory safety expert in North Fort Myers, FL. Although your lab probably knows about the requirements, make sure your enforcement of the rules has not relaxed. For example, too many laboratory employees don’t wear required protective foot wear, says Gile.
Here’s a review of what the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires regarding personal protective equipment (PPE) and a quick checklist of some of the laboratory-specific PPE requirements.
