CMS issues Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems fact sheet

On March 28, CMS issued a fact sheet describing the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), a standardized survey instrument and data collection methodology for measuring patients' perceptions of their hospital experience.

CMS issues fact sheet detailing Medicare payment and volume information for consumers

On March 28, CMS issued a fact sheet announcing that it has begun posting information on the Hospital Compare Web site about selected inpatient hospital stays provided to Medicare patients, including how often patients were admitted to the hospital for these conditions and what Medicare pays for those services.

CMS issues revision to State Operations Manual appendix on EMTALA

On March 21, CMS issued an "advance copy" of a revision to the State Operations Manual appendix on EMTALA. The appendix provides state surveyors with guidance on interpreting and applying the EMTALA regulations.

OIG issues review of excessive payments for outpatient services processed by National Government Services in Michigan and Wisconsin for calendar years 2004 and 2005

On March 27, the OIG issued a report of excessive payments for outpatient services processed by National Government Services in Michigan and Wisconsin for calendar years 2004 and 2005. The OIG determined that 44 of 45 payments of $50,000 or more were inappropriate, resulting in $2,737,857 in overpayments.
