Most CA Medicaid management information system costs allowable

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, April 1, 2008

The majority of California's Medicaid management information system (MMIS) costs were allowable, according to an OIG audit.

Of the $183,179,805 in costs the OIG reviewed, $180,906,594 was allowable. Just over $2 million of the unallowable costs were not allocated to all benefiting programs, were not related to the Medicaid program, or were claimed twice. The remainder was claimed at the incorrect reimbursement rate.

The OIG recommended the state agency:

  • Refund $2,273,211
  • Strengthen internal controls and procedures
  • Review MMIS costs claimed for Federal reimbursement after June 30, 2005
