New Jersey health sciences university off probation

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, March 25, 2008

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), based in Newark, may no longer be on probation but the facility is not out of trouble yet, according to an article in Newsday.

UMDNJ was placed on probation in 2006 after it was discovered the facility double-billed for services under Medicare. An independent auditor uncovered more than $400 million in waste, fraud, and abuse.

The probation monitor wrote his final report in January and last week, the university announced it had received its accreditation back from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. However, the school will still have to submit a new monitoring report in October 2009 and another on June 1, 2012.

Other problems continue to surface for UMDNJ. Last month, two cardiologists pleaded guilty to embezzling a total of $840,000 while providing no meaningful services, according to a Department of Justice press release.
