Tip: Differentiate between auditing and monitoring

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, February 26, 2008

Although many healthcare professionals refer to auditing and monitoring interchangeably, these two actions are really quite different.

Auditing is a formal review governed by professional standards.

Monitoring uses a less structured approach than auditing, although some audit techniques may be employed. Think of monitoring as following trends, conducting analyses, and making adjustments accordingly.

Use terminology consistently within your organization as far as auditing reviews and monitoring.
