Government collects $2.2B in settlements, judgments in Fiscal Year 2006

During fiscal year 2006, the federal government won or negotiated approximately $2.2 billion in judgments and settlements, according to the Health Care Fraud and Abuse Control Program's (HCFAC) annual report released by the OIG.
Approximately $1.5 billion was transferred to the Medicare Trust Fund as a result of these efforts. In addition to $177.1 million in federal Medicaid money transferred separately to the Treasury as a result of these efforts. The HCFAC account has returned more than $10.4 billion to the Medicare Trust Fund since program began in 1997.
According to the report:
- U.S. Attorneys' Offices opened 836 new criminal healthcare fraud investigations
- Federal prosecutors had 1,677 healthcare fraud criminal investigations pending
- Criminal charges were filed in 355 cases
- A total of 547 defendants were convicted for healthcare fraud
- The Department of Justice opened 915 new civil healthcare fraud investigations, and had 2,016 civil healthcare fraud investigations pending at the end of the fiscal year
