iCare asked to refund $8M to Medicare

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, February 19, 2008

iCare Medical Supply owes Medicare over $8 million because it did not claim reimbursement for test strips and lancets properly, according to an OIG audit.

None of the 100 sampled beneficiaries met Medicare requirements. Furthermore, each service line item on each claim had one or more errors, according to OIG auditors. The errors occurred because iCare did not ensure that test strips and lancets billed to Medicare were medically necessary.

iCare received slightly more than $73,000 in improper payments for the 100 sampled beneficiaries. The OIG estimates that at least $8.2 million paid to iCare for test strips and lancets provided in 2002 and 2003 was not allowable.

The OIG recommended that iCare:

  • Refund $8,233,476 to Medicare
  • Work with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to determine the medically necessary of test strips and lancets billed after 2003
