OIG: Illinois, Indiana Medicaid agencies paid benefits for other state's residents

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, February 12, 2008

Lack of inter-government dialogue cost the states of Illinois and Indiana some $600,000 total in erroneous Medicaid payments, according to a recent OIG audit.

The state agencies made the mistakes simple because the Illinois and Indiana state Medicaid agencies did not share information. The Illinois state agency made $408,841 in payments for beneficiaries living in Indiana, while the Indiana state agency paid $236,578 for Medicaid services provided to beneficiaries who lived in Illinois.

The OIG recommend that the Illinois and Indiana agencies share available Medicaid eligibility information to:

  • Determine accurate beneficiary eligibility status
  • Reduce the amount of payments made on behalf of beneficiaries residing in a different state
