CMS issues implementation instructions for Medicare Acute Care Episode demonstration
On January 25, CMS issued a transmittal providing FI/MAC implementation instructions for the Medicare Acute Care Episode ("ACE") demonstration. Hospitals participating in the ACE demonstration, will receive a single global payment for all inpatient facility and professional services furnished to beneficiaries whose discharge is grouped to one of the DRGs covered under the demonstration.
Effective date: October 1, 2008
Implementation date: October 6, 2008

CMS issues update of various claims processing instructions
On January 25, CMS issued a transmittal announcing revisions to various chapters of the Medicare Claims Processing Manual. These changes update the affected chapters to conform to the current UB-04 instructions in Chapter 25 of the Medicare Claims Processing Manual.
Effective date: May 23, 2007
Implementation date: April 7, 2008

CMS issues guidance on reporting patient discharge status codes
On January 23, CMS issued a special edition MLN Matters article, including a set of frequently asked questions, on reporting discharge status codes.

CMS issues guidance on modifiers used in billing for services relating to clinical research studies
On January 22, CMS issued a MLN Matters article on the HCPCS modifiers used to differentiate between routine and investigational patient care services furnished in connection with clinical research studies.

CMS issues instructions for voluntarily reporting clinical trial numbers
On January 18, CMS issued a transmittal providing instructions for voluntarily reporting the applicable clinical trial number on claims for services furnished in connection with clinical research studies. Clinical trial numbers are assigned by the National Library of Medicine Clinical Trials Data Bank.
Effective date: April 1, 2008
Implementation date: April 7, 2008
