Ambulance service providers will soon be reimbursed on a pre-established fee for each service. Currently, payments for ambulance services are based on "reasonable charges" for independent suppliers and "reasonable costs" for provider-based services. The final regulation will be posted in today's Federal Register, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

The fee schedule will be phased in over five years, starting on April 1, 2002. For 2002, services will be paid at 20% of the new fee schedule and 80% of the current rate. In 2003, they will be paid at 40% of the new fee schedule and 80% of the current rate. The increase will continue until services are entirely paid under the new fee schedule.
