The healthcare environment is being altered by a movement toward patient empowerment. Consumers are becoming increasingly involved in their care, which means that patient-provider relationships must change.

"Patient-centered care puts the patient in the middle of how care is designed and provided. It provides patients with access to their medical information and empowers them to be active participants in care decisions and in the daily management of their health and illnesses," says Teresa Zayas Cabán, PhD, senior manager of health IT at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in Rockville, MD.
