CMS issues transmittal correcting device credit threshold
On November 26, CMS issued a transmittal correcting transmittal 1297 to the Medicare Claims Processing Manual (Adjustment to Payment under Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System and Ambulatory Surgical Center Payment System for Partial Device Credit).
Transmittal 1297 had incorrectly stated that, effective January 1, 2008, a hospital will be required to report modifier -FC if the hospital received a credit from a device manufacturer for a replacement device due to premature failure or recall of the device being replaced, and the credit was for 20% or more of the cost of the new replacement device. Under the corrected transmittal, hospitals will not be required to report modifier -FC unless the credit for such devices is 50% or more.
