Hospitals looking for resources to help them properly implement present on admission (POA) reporting should not overlook the ICD-9-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting. The Official Guidelines contain an Appendix (Appendix I) that provides "Present on Admission Reporting Guidelines." Among other things, the POA Reporting Guidelines contain a list of codes that are exempt from the POA reporting requirement. The POA Reporting Guidelines also provide a series of POA reporting examples.
As noted below, CMS and the National Center for Health Statistics have released an updated version of the Official Guidelines. The updated version was effective as of October 1, 2007. The POA Reporting Guidelines begin on p. 92 of the updated Official Guidelines.
