The OIG found the New York State's Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance refunded 1.8 million in its estimated share of AFDC overpayments as recommended in the previous audit report. The previous audit report was issued on January 31, 2003 and was issued to the New York State's Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. The OIG found in the previous report that the State agency allowed individuals or families to receive AFDC benefits to which they were not entitled. The State Agency agreed with the OIG's finding and returned part of the share of AFCD overpayments.
However, the State agency did not implement:
- the OIG's recommendation to ensure that the federal share of AFCD overpayment recoveries were returned to the federal government in a timely fashion
Because of this the State agency did not refund $347,375 in overpayments, and the OIG recommended that the New York State agency due so in an appropriate amount of time.
State agency officials did not disagree with the amount that needed to be returned to the government.
