Arizona Heart Hospital settles with DOJ for 5.8 million

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, November 13, 2007

The Arizona Heart Hospital, a Medcath hospital, has agreed to a settlement in which it will pay $5.8 million to the U.S. DOJ. The hospital allegedly misused equipment to treat aneurysms, and submitted related claims to Medicare according to the Charlotte Business Journal article.

The claims were for physician services to implant the devices, which had not received marketing approval from the FDA. MedCath said that the allegations related to whether the procedures were reimbursable by Medicare, and did not indicate a low quality of patient care according to the Charlottle Business Journal article.

The hospital denied the allegations and any illegal conduct.
