Every patient should be screened for palliative care needs, says Yvonne D'Arcy, MS, CRNP, CNS, in an interview to be published in the December issue of Case Management Monthly.
A pain and palliative care nurse practitioner at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda MD, D'Arcy says "comprehensive care and cost reduction" have made providing symptom control at the early stages of an illness a priority for many.
"It really is a translation of the hospice team model, where the group would sit down and discuss what each patient needed," says D'Arcy. "This means identifying the patient with a chronic illness as someone who has merit and needs specialized attention.
"Patients are living longer. By 2020, 20% of the national population will be over 65 years of age. The change in demographics will only increase the need for palliative care services."
The full interview with Yvonne D'Arcy will appear in the December issue of Case Management Monthly
