The trade body for home and hospice care providers has urged legislators to back federal bills that it says aim to limit "dramatic cuts" in the Medicare home health program. One of those behind the bills, Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) said in a statement that cuts in home health spending proposed by CMS, and due to come into force in January 2008, would be "devastating". Her Senate bill would block the proposed 11.75% cuts.
"[T]he Medicare home health benefit has already taken a larger hit in spending cuts over the past 10 years than any other Medicare benefit," said Senator Collins. "In fact, home care, as a share of Medicare spending, has dropped from 8.7% in 1997 to only 3.2% today. And it's projected to decline to just 2.6% of Medicare spending in 2015."
The National Association for Home Care & Hospice said CMS' proposed cuts amounted to $6 billion.
